How To Design A Functional Mudroom

Whilst commonplace in Europe and the USA, we are finding the ‘mudroom’ is becoming increasingly sought after in Australian home design. A mudroom is essentially a room between the exterior and the interior of the home and is the first port of call for removing shoes, hats,  jackets, school bags and umbrellas. Generally speaking, it is a highly functional room with ample storage and washing up facilities making it the ideal spot to offload dirty laundry and shoes without traipsing dirt through the home.

It’s important to design your mudroom to suit the needs of your family and incorporate storage elements such as hooks, shoe racks, coat lockers and cubby holes. A bench seat is also handy as it allows you to sit down and remove footwear. If the space is large enough we also recommend adding in a sink for hand washing and a washing machine for easy drop off of clothing.

At Retreat Design we have some clever cabinetry solutions for streamlining this room and getting the most out of your space. Our supplier Birex has some great options for laundry cabinetry and we can also custom design cabinetry to suit other joinery throughout the home. Remember a practical, well thought out space should enhance the functionality of your day-to-life and be the perfect addition to a bustling family home.
